British became paramount power in India

British became paramount power in India
With the dissolution of the Maratha Empire, the British became the paramount power in India. Of the great Maratha houses, Shinde (Scindia) of Gwalior, Holkar of Indore and Gaekwad of Baroda as well as the Chhatrapati rival claim house of Bhonsle of Kolhapur survived as princely states in the British Raj until Indian independence. In 1947 there were 565 Princely States in the Raj, which included a large number of Maratha states. Several Maratha states were forcibly annexed into the Raj under the doctrine on lapse, notably Bhonsle of Satara (1849), Bhonsle of Nagpur (1853), Newalkar of Jhansi (1853), Bhonsle of Thanjavur (1855). The remnant Mughal Empire was formally abolished after the Mutiny of 1857, in which other than the titular head of the Mutiny Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, another important leader was the adopted son of Bajirao Peshwa II, Nanasaheb II.
